Notable Gamblers Who Succeeded at Winning Roulette

Roulette is one of the casinos’ biggest sources of revenue. The reason of course, is the game’s popularity despite the game’s high house edge. With that latter part said, you may want to ask, “Why is roulette still famous?”

Roulette’s Allure

Heavy marketing aside, roulette has two real qualities that make it appealing to casino gamblers. The first is its simplicity. It has very easy to memorize rules that even an uneducated homeless person can play it, in addition to being fast-paced and so straightforward. The other is the supposed ease of winning the game. That’s right, popular opinion holds that it is easy to make profits in roulette compared to other games of chance. This knowledge is so widespread that many take chances in the roulette table, and even tried to pull the odds to their favor through betting systems and other means.

The general perception that roulette is an easy to win casino game is never factual. Roulette is known to be a totally random game where one’s chance of winning roulette is equal to his or her odds of losing. However, it’s more of a frequent occurrence though that roulette players end up leaving the casino with a long face than going home rich. The allure of roulette simply kept them inside the casino even after winning big.

A Short List of Famous Roulette Winners

Nevertheless, there are still those who managed to successfully win big in casino roulette, with some even exhausting the table of all its funds. With so much publicity, they helped reinforce the notion that one can get rich in roulette. They are the following:

1. Joseph Jagger
The most famous of these gamblers is known as “The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo”. Having worked extensively with machines, he discerned that minor imbalances can create biases in the roulette wheel. In 1873, he hired six clerks to observe the wheels in Monte Carlo’s Beaux-Arts Casino and discovered one wheel with a noticeable bias. He placed his stakes on this wheel and won about £65,000, which is a pretty huge sum back in the day.

2. William Darnborough
Mr. Darnborough is known for having accumulated an equivalent of £267,343 in the roulette tables of Monte Carlo from 1904 to 1911. In those seven years, he learned how to systematically predict exactly where the ball will land, and made his break after betting and winning on Red-5 five times in a row.

3. The Eudaemons
The Eudaemons are University of California Santa Cruz students, who invented a hidden roulette computer that can predict the results of a spin. They started out so well in their venture, but alas, like many others, they got sucked into the excitement. Their device stopped working as intended, and they consequently lost.

4. Ashley Revell
Revell became famous in 2004 when he wagered what basically is his net worth on red. To everyone’s surprise, he won. However, unlike other gamblers, he simply cashed out his wins, tipped the dealer, then left to start an online poker company.

Take note that these people won through either sheer luck or extremely rare abilities essential to beating roulette. Admire them, but don’t try so much to emulate them as winning roulette like these famous players once did is only possible only through sheer amounts of luck.
