Roulette Wheel Tips: Differences Between the American and European Roulette Wheel Layout

They say that roulette players are very lucky these days, because the game is becoming more accessible with the online availability of roulette games in online casinos. Add to that, players can also avail of some bonuses offered by these casinos, which they can use as they play a real online game. The biggest advantage of being a roulette player nowadays is having quick access to roulette wheel tips shared by some roulette players who have been playing for some time.

One very practical tip that roulette players may read about is choosing to play the European roulette game over the American roulette game. These two are variations of the roulette game and both are equally exciting to play, but the American and European roulette wheel layout have differences. The European version is also more popular than the American version of the game, and this can be attributed to the fact that the former gives a better advantage to the players over the latter. To get a full understanding of how these two versions differ, it is good to take a look at the differences in the wheel layout.

A Comparison of the American and European Roulette Wheel

For starters, it would be good to know that the European roulette wheel is the original version of the game. The wheel contains 37 slots, and this includes the numbers 1 to 36 and the single zero (0). This version of the game is also sometimes referred to as French Roulette or Single Zero Roulette. With the wheel having 37 slots, this version of the roulette game gives a house edge of 2.7%.

Meanwhile, the American roulette is a version of the game which came out much later. The American roulette wheel has 38 slots. It includes the numbers 1 to 36, the single zero (0) and the double zero (00). Sometimes, it is also known as the Double Zero roulette. With one more number added to it compared to the European roulette wheel layout, the house edge is higher at 5.26%.

It is believed that the American roulette version of the game was essentially created to increase the advantage that the house is getting. This was done by adding the double zero on the wheel. This will now make you understand why most roulette wheel tips would emphasize that it is a must to select the European roulette wheel when you play roulette.

Roulette Rules Applicable Exclusively to European Roulette

While we all know that in playing both versions of the game the mechanics are the same, there are some roulette rules which are applicable only to a European roulette game. We are referring to the En Prison and the La Partage rules.

For the En Prison rule, in case the ball falls on the single zero slot, a player has the option to take back the bet that he or she has placed on the roulette table or just leave it on the same spot for the next spin result. Once the roulette player leaves it on the same spot, then the ball falls on the single zero again, the player automatically loses the bet.

For the La Partage rule, on the other hand, once the ball lands on the single zero slot on the roulette wheel, the player is not allowed to change or take back the bet. The bet will then be cut into half and must stay on the same spot for the next round.

Aside from the mechanics mentioned above for both the En Prison and La Partage, it is important to note that they can only be applied if the player makes an even money bet. Hence, players who want to take advantage of either the En Prison or La Partage when playing a European roulette game must make sure they are making even money bets.
