Types of Roulette Wheels

Roulette is an old casino game yet its popularity never seem to have waned a bit ever since it was introduced back in the 18th century France. It has attracted countless of gamblers from so many generations, creating a fan base rivalled only by other well-known games such as Poker, Blackjack and slot machine games. Indeed, millions of gambling enthusiasts have already been enamored by roulette, and the numbers never ceased growing.

This reputation lies primarily on the game’s design. Anybody who has played roulette can simply attest to the game’s simplicity, both in its set up and in its very fluid gameplay. The game is so simple that it can be summed up in these three steps: betting, spinning, and winning or losing. In other words, it starts when the player places his or her bets, followed by the spinning of the wheel and ball by the dealer, after which the winning bet is decided by wherever the ball lands.

The Significance of the Roulette Wheel

The entire roulette set meanwhile, takes only two primary elements, that is, the wheel and the betting layout. Yes, you can do away with the table and play roulette with just these two crucial components. However, the game can never be possible without one or the other. In theory though, you can still play the game with just the wheel.

The wheel truly is the most important part of every roulette table. It serves no other purpose than deciding which bet should win – perhaps the most crucial function in the game. Roulette in fact, will never be without the wheel. After all, that’s where the game’s name, which is French for “little wheel” came from.

The Two Forms of the Wheel

Now the wheel comes in two variants, both classified merely for the amount of green zero slots present in them and nothing else. Usually, a casino would only feature one type of wheel and not both. This is because the number of zeros on the wheel dictates the house’s advantage. As such, the casinos’ choice of the wheel shows whether it cares for profits or attracting customers.

The first is the single zero roulette wheel which is also called the European roulette wheel. This wheel is often associated with European and French roulette, and is the most common of the two roulette wheels. As the name suggests, it features one zero slot in addition to the numbers 1-36. The single zero allows for better chances of winning with even-money or dozen bets.

The other roulette wheel is the double zero wheel. This is exclusive to the American version of the game, which is the prevalent variant in the US, South America, and a few other places. This wheel has two zero slots, namely 0 and 00, and is slightly larger than its single zero counterpart. Naturally, the presence of two zeros made winning a little harder and the house edge significantly higher, and as a result, most casinos favor the single zero wheel instead of this.

As you can see, the wheel dictates not only the winner, but also the odds and house advantage there is in a roulette game. A wise gambler therefore should take whatever the casino’s choice in roulette wheels to account if he or she is scouting for the best casino to play the game in.
