Why French Roulette is Rarely Played in Casinos

Roulette is popular in such a way that when you talk about it, even those who do not go to casinos know what it is. While inside a casino though, it only falls second to the game of slots. The roulette game has some variations. There is the American roulette, European roulette, and last but not least the French roulette. The first two are very popular and you often see it in casinos, both land based and online.  The third one can rarely be found in casinos.

If you are surprised why only two varieties of the game can be seen in casinos, you will understand as you continue to read. American and European roulette is preferred by most casinos because of the high house edge. The French variety on the other hand, has the lower house edge amongst the three. This means the casino will have lesser chances of earning with the French roulette.

The Wheel and How It is Different With the Roulette Variations

The European roulette variation uses a roulette wheel that has the numbers 0 to 36. The American roulette wheel variation on the other hand, uses a roulette wheel which has an additional double zero in addition to the numbers 0 to 36. The European roulette gives the house an advantage of 2.7%. American roulette meanwhile, provides the house a 5.25% edge. American roulette is clearly the most popular variation that most players see in casinos as compared to the European roulette version.

The French version is the one that is rarely seen in casinos, because of the very low 1.35% advantage it gives the house. It is the “La Partage” rule that gives an advantage to the players when the ball lands on the zero. The amount is divided equally to the house and the player. This explains clearly why most casino operators do not like to have a French variation. It is just not feasible to have a lower income for business to stay in shape longer.

Roulette and Other Casino Games Compared

Casino players know that there are also games that gives the house a much lower advantage, but operators still continue to offer such games. Examples of which are games like blackjack or video poker. Nevertheless, gamblers still enjoy these games a lot. This is because it requires some skill and luck to win these games. Roulette on the other hand, is a game that totally lies on luck. Meaning, the outcome of a game of video poker or blackjack is affected if the player is not skilled t playing the game. With French variation of roulette, the house edge is constant at 1.35%.

Next time you drop by a casino to play a game of roulette. Always check if they are offering a French roulette game. Take advantage of it and play the game. Try to ask if they offer “La Partage” because some casinos have actually taken this off and just have European roulette which is made to look like the French variation. Remember that it does not offer the same winning opportunity as the original one.
