Supposing you have a lot of spare time and a lot of extra money, how will you spend it? Will you go shopping in the nearest mall? Will you visit that amusement park with your friends or family? Will you opt to go to the cinemas to watch your most anticipated flick? Invite that special someone to a classy restaurant for a romantic dinner? Or would you rather walk right into the casinos and waste it all away in roulette? We’re pretty sure many will choose the last option.
Well who can blame them? For such a simple game, roulette is fun, thrilling and exciting, plus you get a very high chance of winning. In this article, we will discuss the very basics of casino roulette, from its conception to how the game is played.
How Roulette Games Came to Being
Roulette began as a 17th century attempt at creating a perpetual motion machine by no less than Dr. Blaise Pascal. Designed as a wheel, this invention later became the basis of the ever-popular casino game. However, it was not until the 1700s that the wheel became the core of a new gambling sport we now call roulette. Casino roulette starts growing in popularity since then, and its fame allowed it to spread throughout the globe. Multiple variations of this game were created as it spreads, its rules adapting to the culture and preferences of whoever adopts it.
Basics of the Roulette Table
The table used for casino roulette is composed of two main elements. The first is the wheel, which is the core of every roulette game. This is composed of one or two green and 36 red and black numbers, each with its own slot on which the ball falls in. Inside the wheel’s rim is a special track the ball is meant to travel on. During each spin, the ball is made to roll on this path, opposite the direction the wheel is spinning.
The other primary part of the roulette table is the roulette board where all the bets are placed. The board’s typical layout is composed of the red and black numbers 1-36, surrounded on three sides by at least one zero slot and the betting slots for even and odd numbers, red and black, low number bets (1-18), high number bets (19-36), dozens and columns.
Roulette Rules in Casinos
The game begins with players predicting where the ball will land on the next spin, then placing chips on their guesses’ corresponding space on the roulette board. There are two types of bets: the outside bets and the inside bets. The latter encompasses bets placed on one or more specific numbers, while the former are wagers placed on spaces representing groups of numbers – i. e. odd, even, 1-18, 19-36, dozens and columns – and the colors red and black. Note that outside bets have generally higher odds of winning but produces lesser payout than inside bets.
The betting process may continue even after the dealer spins the wheel. Players can change and/or add more stakes during this time, until the dealer announces the closing of bets. By then, the ball is rolled in the wheel and there is nothing else the players can do, and just hope that it lands exactly on the spot they have placed their bets on. If the bet wins, it is rewarded with a payout that depends on its probability of winning. The higher its winning odds are, the lesser it pays out.
In European roulette and – occasionally – in some casinos that offer American or any other version, a special rule is invoked whenever the ball lands on zero. This is called the La Partage rule, which basically allows the player to take half his stakes if his/her bet has lost. A second option, called En Prison, allows the player to let his whole bet stay on the board for the next spin. However, whatever happens if the player opts for En Prison and the ball lands again on zero is subject to the casino’s house rules.
Despite its simple setup and rather uncomplicated rules, roulette has been proven as a really entertaining and exciting game, time and again. This is the undisputed reason why it has drawn so many visitors and gamblers through the years. However, if you do not prefer to go to gambling establishments to play casino roulette, you can always try its online version – it’s just as fun.
